LWV Nonpartisan Policy

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters.  From the beginning, the League was an activist, grassroots organization whose leaders fought to improve our systems of government and to impact public policy through education and advocacy.

The League of Women Voters does not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

The choice made in 1920 to neither support nor oppose any political party or candidate for public office continues today to ensure that the League’s voice is heard above the tumult of party politics.

Nonpartisanship toward candidates and political parties is critical to the effectiveness of the League's unique voter service/citizen information work. It also provides a strong foundation for the work done in support of issues. Action on legislation and ballot proposals is more effective when the public and the legislators believe that the League's conclusions are based on merit rather than politics.
