League celebrates 100th Anniversary of Ratification of 19th Amendment in WI

    June 27, 2019

On Sunday, June 23 LWVOZ members Nancy Haacke, Marge Palleon, Mary Fran Lepeska and Barbara Johnson went to Madison for a program marking the 100th anniversary of Wisconsin’s ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.  The event was organized by LWV Wisconsin and LWV Dane County and was well attended, with many wearing white clothing and dresses and hats reminiscent of the suffragists as well as sashes saying “Votes for Women”.

Prior to the program we enjoyed the Wisconsin Historical Society exhibit in the capitol rotunda, “The Women’s Hour Has Struck,” which explained Wisconsin’s part in the suffrage movement.

Outside, the fun started with the songs of the Raging Grannies in front of the Forward Wisconsin statue on the capitol steps, followed by a program hosted by Joy Cardin. Shortly after the first introductions the skies opened with the first of two downpours, which left us totally drenched in spite of our umbrellas. No matter – we enjoyed it all!  A short play recommended to the committee by Nancy Haacke showed how David James was convinced by his daughter Ada to deliver the ratification document to Washington, making Wisconsin the first state to ratify. Following that was the interpretation of Carrie Chapman Catt, the founder of the League of Women Voters. The skies cleared just as the program was ending and we joined everyone in a “spirited” march around the Capitol.

It was an inspiring day and a reminder of Wisconsin’s role in the struggle for the right of women to vote.
