2020: What's Ahead

It was a snowy and cold Saturday morning on January 11th, but 25 LWVOZ members and guests braved the elements to attend the League’s Planning Meeting in the Cedarburg Public Library. Following a time for socializing with breakfast treats, President Barbara Hunt called the meeting to order. It began with two speakers, LWV members Deb Patel and Chris Rahlf.

Deb Patel spoke of the background of the LWV Supreme Court case involving redistricting in Wisconsin and her role in that case. The Supreme Court declared that it was not able to rule either way and left it up to the state to resolve the issue. Deb spoke of the impact on voters the way maps were drawn following the last census. At present members of LWVOZ are working to encourage the County Board to pass a fair maps resolution. Fifty counties in Wisconsin have done so.

Chris Rahlf is on the staff of Senator Tammy Baldwin in her Milwaukee office. She spoke of the variety of things people contact the Senator about and gave suggestions about writing emails and letters to elected officials. To be most impactful, write with examples of how issues affect you personally.

Nancy Haacke, Centennial Committee Chair, told of our League’s plans to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the founding of the LWV. Events will be listed on the Calendar of Events as details become available.

Other upcoming LWVOZ events include a film on February 11, the Women’s History Month Luncheon on March 21, a book talk on April 20 and a forum on human trafficking that is in the planning stages. Check the Calendar of Events on the website for details.
