On August 26, 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the proclamation granting American women the constitutional right to vote. Because of this occasion, August 26 has become known as Women’s Equality Day.
On August 26, across the country, bells will be rung in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the proclamation. Locally there will be a bell ringing in Port Washington.
All are invited to gather and participate in this occasion to honor the women who made this day possible. Please wear something “white” to symbolize the suffragists and all women who worked to gain women the vote.
Please wear a mask and practice social distancing.
